Meet The Colleagues
Matthew Jackson's upcoming service with Ubom! In Grahamstown, South Africa arose from his love of the theatre, his parents' South African heritage, and "approximately 14.6 billion forwarded emails." Ubom! Theatre Company, which takes professional plays to underserved communities, is a logical choice for this 2010 University of Puget Sound Theatre Arts major who speaks of the profound effects a performance can have on both the theatre-goer and the theatre-maker. Ubom!'s timely plays and post-performance discussions seem "like an extremely effective way to initiate social change." Matthew, who anticipates helping with the touring company and hopes to write or act for Ubom! as well, knows he will be impacted by the process of production, writing, and acting. "As Christians, we are taught to love one's neighbor as oneself, and I find loving my neighbor is a little easier once I understand him a bit better."
Matthew's Service BioI will be volunteering with Ubom! Eastern Cape Drama Company in Grahamstown, South Africa, conducting workshops in the community and schools. The assignment as of now is not all clear, though I will likely be working with underprivileged children, teaching them theatre and improvisation skills.
