Meet The Colleagues
Sarah Jackson
Sarah's Impact
Talented artist Sarah Jackson trained preschool teachers while volunteering in a township in South Africa, her grandparents' homeland. When she saw how poverty kept schoolchildren bereft of art supplies or books in their native language, she wrote a story illustrating a child learning to paint using mud as a medium.
On her return, Sarah used the grant you provided to attend a national conference merging faith, service, and the arts. "I was reminded of the profound impact of using the arts for service and exposed to research that backs this up," said Sarah, who knows that often people see art as a luxury pursuit.
"It inspired me to continue to see any art I do as having an impact on my community." Sarah now attends graduate school at the Savannah College of Art and Design.
Sarah's Service Bio
In Grahamstown, I worked for an organization that helped train and equip preschool teachers, and I worked at an after-school program. In Mthatha, I am working at a clinic and a preschool in an informal settlement.
